Toothpaste OEM Processing Quality Performance and Toothpaste Quality Issues

The quality of a toothpaste cannot be judged only by the quantity of a certain raw material or the amount of foam. The following points should be considered: The consistency should be appropriate and it should be squeezed out of the tube into strips that can cover the teeth without splashing.;The friction force is moderate, should have a good cleansing effect without damaging tooth enamel;the paste is stable, does not separate water during storage, does not harden, does not liquefy, has a stable pH value;medicated toothpaste must maintain its effectiveness during the expiration date;the paste should have a body that should be smooth and beautiful, without bubbles;Although foam is not directly related to quality, there must be adequate foam during the cleaning process so that food residues can be suspended and easily removed, the aroma and taste must be suitable.Specific quality standards for toothpaste include the following two aspects.①Sensory indicators: the paste should be homogeneous, without moisture separation, without water leakage, fine and without lumps, clean and free of impurities, with a distinct aroma and odorless. The hose should be straight and the seal at the end of the pipe should be strong and neat. The thread of the cap must fit tightly to the hose, the design of the hose and the inscription must be clear, the color must be neat and bright.Small packaging boxes must have clear printed designs and accurate colors. The body of the box must be straight, clean and undamaged. Medium packaging boxes and large boxes must be dry, and the inside and outside dimensions must be the same.②Physical and Chemical Indicators Toothpaste Standard (GB8372-2001) determines the pH value, consistency, paste compression pressure, foam volume, stability and hygiene performance of toothpaste.Common toothpaste quality problems are mainly blackening of the toothpaste, hardening of the paste, bloating, thinning of the paste, water separation, hose rupture, leakage at the end of the hose, etc. To discuss the causes of these quality problems, the following specific points can be highlighted.(1) Bloating As the name suggests, bloating is a phenomenon in which the pressure inside the tube is too high due to the release of gas, causing the package to expand or even cause the paste to burst through the package. This is a relatively intuitive issue, and also an issue that consumers are more sensitive to.The reasons are mainly related to raw materials and auxiliary materials, raw material loading, paste making process, etc. These reasons are briefly described below.①The influence of raw materials such as calcium hydrogen phosphate and soda sulfate.Calcium carbonate toothpaste contains about 50% calcium carbonate. To prevent corrosion of the aluminum tube, 0.3% to 0.5% calcium hydrogen phosphate dihydrate and the same amount of alkali are usually added as corrosion inhibitors. However, their number largely depends on whether the paste will swell. If there is a lack of calcium hydrogen phosphate dihydrate and at the same time alkaloids, the toothpaste will swell within several days at room temperature and within 12 hours at high temperatures. During this time, if you open the lid, the paste will quickly move out, and in severe cases it will swell. It can travel very far beyond the body and even cause the end of the tube or cap to explode. This is a more serious type.Examine the resulting gas and you will realize that it is hydrogen, as it clearly has the explosive characteristics of hydrogen. This proves that due to the absence of corrosion inhibitor, the surface protective film of the aluminum pipe cannot be formed and the cathodic or anodic reaction is blocked, resulting in a chemical reaction between copper, iron and other impurities in the raw material or aluminum.tube and aluminum tube or the formation of a primary battery causing galvanic corrosion, also known as surface corrosion and hydrogen expansion.Observation of the cut sample shows that the paste contains a lot of water and is unsightly in appearance, and the inner wall of the tube is heavily corroded and loses its metallic luster. If the calcium hydrogen phosphate dihydrate content of calcium carbonate toothpaste exceeds the standard, for example, if it exceeds 2%, it will also cause bloating, but it will take longer.By analyzing these toothpastes, in addition to the excessive content of calcium hydrogen phosphate, it can also be found that the gas produced is mainly carbon dioxide, with the characteristic reaction of carbon dioxide (making clear lime water cloudy). It can undergo the following chemical reactions: CaHPO4.2H2O=CaHPO4 +2H2O 5CaHPO4+ H2O=Ca5(PO4)3OH+2H3PO4 2H+ +CaCO3=Ca2+ +H2O+ CO2↑ ②Effect of preservatives In order to meet the popular trend of green movement and the requirements of reducing production costs, the content of preservatives in products are now generally reduced, allowing certain fungi to survive and reproduce, and to be metabolized to produce gas through microbial fermentation.Through microbiological testing, it can be found that the bacteria content is seriously above the standard, at the same time, the bacteria cause taste change, bad odor, rancidity and bad odor. But in this case, the inner wall of the aluminum pipe will not corrode at all.③From the point of view of equipment technology, if the equipment cannot reach a certain degree of vacuum during the paste making process, the degassing effect will not be ideal, and more gas will remain in the paste. The toothpaste will remain in the tube while it is being filled.Leaving a small amount of air at the mouth or end of the tube will also provide a good habitat for microorganisms to grow. The phenomenon of bloating caused by this aspect is relatively obvious and easy to detect.Production requirements can be met by improving process conditions. In short, there are many causes of bloating, such as calcium carbonate which makes up 50% of toothpaste, aluminum purity, smelting process, surface roughness, other raw materials and even environment and other factors will cause a number of chemical and other factors.electrochemical reactions.Bloating can be caused by one reason or a combination of reasons.(2) Separate the water The phenomenon of water separation in toothpaste is very common, and its causes are numerous and more complex. As a result, the homogeneous colloidal system of the toothpaste is destroyed, causing separation of solid and liquid phases and precipitation of water.Among them, the following factors are mainly distinguished.①Thickener It plays an important role in the stability of the paste. The degree of substitution of CMC is generally average in terms of macrostatistics and is not uniform. It is difficult to ensure the formation of a uniform three-dimensional network structure, which makes the water in the paste not easily fixed into the paste and separate water. Phenomenon. In addition, as mentioned earlier, due to the influence of the green movement, the amount of fungicides is decreasing day by day, and the possibility of bacteria surviving and growing in toothpaste is greatly increased. Bacteria and other microorganisms can degrade CMC and also cause water to separate, so bloating is common accompanied by dehydration. In addition, CMC is a polymeric sodium salt with poor salt resistance. Large amounts of sodium salt are often added to toothpaste. Due to the coionic effect, the viscosity of the paste is reduced and even water is separated. When using other adhesives with good salt resistance. The agent can be mixed or used separately to avoid water separation caused by the adhesive.②Foaming agent The commonly used foaming agent in toothpaste is sodium lauryl sulfate. The content of dodecanol and tetradecyl alcohol is different. High or low content will have a great influence on the stability of the toothpaste. If you only meet company standards, regardless of their content, this may result in unstable paste.Only by measuring the content of each alcohol by gas chromatography, combined with the actual situation of the enterprise, gaining experience and selecting the appropriate content ratio, it is usually ideal that the dodecanol content is 35%~45% and the tetradecanol content is ≤15%..③Moisturizer Currently, three moisturizers are widely used: sorbitol, glycerin and propylene glycol. If the water content of sorbitol is too high, some people have even noticed that if the raw starch used to make sorbitol becomes moldy, water separation may occur..④Technology In production, if the grinding and shearing force of the paste making machine is too strong, it will destroy the network structure of CMC, destroy the stability of the colloid, and cause water separation. Therefore, the cooking time of the pasta must be strictly controlled and cannot be too long.In addition, the temperature of the toothpaste is relatively high immediately after it is supplied to the paste storage tank.If the lid is immediately closed, the water vapor evaporates and then condenses and flows back, releasing the water and destroying the stability of the colloid.Install an exhaust fan on the lid to cool and remove water vapor.(3)Thinning There are two main reasons for paste thinning.First, CMC is decomposed by microorganisms and becomes thinner. The toothpaste was analyzed for its composition and it was found that the content of the abrasive agent was normal, but the microorganisms exceeded the norm.Secondly, there are operation and equipment factors. This situation is relatively common and is usually divided into several supplied liquids and paste making equipment, such as water sucked in by the vacuum tube when the power is turned off.Quantitative analysis of friction additive content shows that when the content is less than 1-2 percentage points, the consistency is quite low. This problem can be solved by strict management, standardization of feeding procedures and installing a check valve between the vacuum pipeline and the paste making machine to prevent water from being sucked back.
